“For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” - 2 Corinthians 1:8-9
We often place spiritual leaders on a pedestal, believing that their lives are without struggles. After all, they walk closer to the Lord than most and His blessings are so great that life for them should be smooth as silk. This is particularly believed about ministry and spiritual pursuits. But, how true is this, and if not, is it only those who are failing leaders that struggle?
Look closely to the passage at hand and think about Paul's afflictions. He "despaired of life itself". Even a chosen apostle of the Lord can be burdened beyond his strength. While we might think such troubles come only to those who are distant from the Lord, consider Paul's reasoning; "But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God".
Troubles and burdens come to all God's children my friend. While your afflictions may be a result of careless living, they also may be given to draw you closer to the Lord. Don't despair in dark hours, but keep your eyes on "God who raises the dead".
