“Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, for the customs of the peoples are vanity…” -- Jeremiah 10:2-3a
How well do we understand the cry for relevance? The church is continually pressed to be up to speed with the contemporary world. But, how far should we go to be like the nations, to reach them for Christ? Someone once coined the phrase, "Be in the world, not of the world!"
With great sadness, we see the Church of today acting very much like Judah of old. She has learned the way of the nations and she has become influenced by their customs. Rather than being transformed to the image of her Savior, she has become conformed to a world of vanity. Rather than effecting, she has become affected.
The simple truth is found in this my friend: Choose wisely who you will learn from. You can learn the ways of the nations or you can "...learn from me (Jesus)" Matthew 11:28. The only way that you can make a difference is to be different. The only way to make disciples is to be a disciple. You need to be in contact with the world, but never in contract!
