"When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples." -- John 18:1-2
Where can we go to find refuge from the storms of life? Is solace found in a place or a person? While a garden may be a peaceful scene for quiet talks with the Master, it can also be a place of open betrayal. No place is safe from the devouring lion of evil, and no place is removed from the devoted Lamb of God.
Would that we might be comforted in the serene surroundings of the lush garden paths? Oh that we could find a calming air as we walk along a gentle stream in the cool of the evening. But, the real rest and tranquility is to be found in the One who often meets us with refreshing words of hope.
It was in the Garden that God called out to Adam, and in another garden that Jesus called out to Mary. While trouble may be ever present my friend, be at ease in the promising presence of the Prince of Peace. Come to the garden of His presence and hear His words afresh... "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27)
