"Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever — do not abandon the works of your hands". - Psalm 138:6-8 (NIV)
We adopted our dog from an animal rescue shelter some years ago. The shelter had an experience at the time that touched my heart. They told of driving down a dirt road one rainy afternoon. Suddenly they spotted a mud covered domesticated rabbit, floundering in a gully on the roadside. They stopped, rescued the little fellow and brought him back to the shelter. In no time the sadly abandoned rabbit became a happy part of the shelter family. When this poor animal was at the end of his rope, someone reached down and preserved his life.
Have you ever found yourself floundering in the mud on the roadside? Have you felt hopelessly stuck in the midst of trouble? Well, know this... Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly. He will preserve your life and fulfill his purpose for you, because his love endures forever. Children of faith are the work of God's hands and he will never abandon them like so many people abandon their pets.
An important word in this passage is "Though". Be assured that God is never so high that he won't reach down to rescue and there is no trouble so great from which God can't deliver. The rains will come and the mud will be slippery, but... your love, O Lord, endures forever.
